AFAD also said that 27 people were injured in the quake. Atsushi Miyazaki, an assistant working for the Japanese Association for Aid and Relief (AAR), died in Van province on Thursday after being pulled out of the rubble, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported. Miyazaki had been buried under the debris of Bayram Hotel that collapsed during Wednesday night's earthquake. Turkish search and rescue teams reached and pulled out Miyazaki, who was in serious condition, 13 hours after the earthquake. The team members inoculated him with serum and did a heart massage on the spot. The earthquake hit Edremit town of Van province at 21:23 local time (1923 GMT) Wednesday, according to Turkey's Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute. About 25 buildings, including two hotels, collapsed in the quake, the AFAD said, adding that the Turkish Red Crescent immediately dispatched 986 tents and 783 rescue workers to Van province. |
