The spill, which was previously estimated at 44 tonnes, occurred on April 25. It has seriously polluted the Angara River and forced the water supply to 77,000 residents to be shut down in three nearby cities. Schools and kindergartens were also closed. The local government is conducting cleanup operations on the river following the spill. High-quality activated carbon from China is being used in the cleanup operations. It is being also used in the filter cassettes installed on the water intake. The water supply to one of the three affected cities resumed on Tuesday. Schools had reopened as of Wednesday morning, while kindergartens remained closed. Local media said the local Emergency Department is still probing the incident. |
